This post discusses the inspiration for one of my favourite pieces of work Love Ties. The proposal for Love Ties first came from a Public Art training project run by pro-POSIT in 2003. A group of 10 artists were all invited to stay in Hanley town centre for a couple of days. We were deluged with information, from Town Planners, Designers and Council Officials all talking about Hanley, which we had to take inspiration from and come up with a Public Art Proposal for the City Centre. The then City Centre Manager told us he wanted the people of Stoke on Trent to Love Hanley with a capital L. Hence the seed was sown!
I thought about how you could get someone to love a town and in my research I decided to apply the rules of Love to Hanley Town Centre. I took my rules from the book “All the Rules: Time-tested Secrets for Capturing the Heart of Mr. Right” by Ellen Fein and Sherrie Schneider (somewhat un PC when applied to women!)
Hanley is meant to be the Potteries City Centre. The Potteries is made up of multiple smaller towns and I started thinking what might happen if Love Letters were written by residents in all the various smaller towns and were then fabricated as LED Lights and installed on buildings around Hanley. Love from the community to the community.
